This is my story........

My photo
Wrapped in Love Quilts are memory quilts for all occasions with Hospice patients having priority. Wrapped in Love Quilts was created after I learned a friend of mine had terminal cancer. I knew how much she loved her family, especially her grandchildren. I didn't know what to say to her when I received the news of her cancer so I came up with a way for her to wrap the love of her family around her. I created a photo quilt of all her loved ones along with her grandchildren's handprints on the back. She called it her faithful companion. Sue Liston passed away on October 31, 2007. During the year 2008 I created many quilts for hospice patients and persons that needed a little extra love wrapped around them. As you view the quilts and read the stories about them, starting with Sue's(2008-#1), you will see what a rewarding journey I have been on. The quilts are a beautiful way to express love when words seem inadequate. Needless to say, I feel very blessed to be able to help others. For more information about the quilts, email wrappedinlovequilts@yahoo.com OR tnlgoofingoff@yahoo.com. Click on photos for larger images.

#39 Granny Boyd

The life of Granny Boyd. This is a quilt of love....her family. It starts at the top left corner when she was 15 years old and captures her life until the recent picture in the bottom left corner. The bottom right is her family a year ago. There are collages of many pictures of her husband (PaPa), 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 3 greatgrandchildren and their families.
Christmas 2009 Granny's comment: this is the greatest gift I have ever received.

#36 Jill York

This is an extra large quilted pillow sham. It was made from tshirts Jill's mom found after she had me make a tshirt quilt (#26) for Jill. Minnie Mouse is the inside flap (her little sweatshirt) of her "envelope" style sham. It will be great for either stuffing with a pillow or blanket or momentos. Jill's mom got excited this summer about having special gifts made for her daughter. It was fun making her Christmas more meaningful.
Wed., 12/30/09 Note from Jill: I LOVED it!!! I cried it was so special!! Thank you so much!!!! Words cannot explain how much this means to me!

#34 Darrell's gift to sister Janice (3 of 3)

Although their family is like most moving away from their hometown, they all remain close at heart. They all have a special place in their hearts for their little sister Jamie (3rd picture in the second row) who died of cystic fibrosis when she was young.

The back of each of the quilts has a message Darrell wrote:
Life is fragile and fleeting....memories are vivid and worth keeping.

#33 Darrell's gift to sister Marie (2 of 3)

This family has such fond memories of their parents and their upbringing. Darrell's wife, Teresa, had fun helping with these quilts. Darrell felt his Dad was watching and chuckling as he and Teresa tied the knots on this quilt.

#32 Darrell Wilkey (1 of 3)

Darrell saw the quilt that was made for his wife when her father died (#24) and requested 3 quilts to honor his parents. This one was made for him and the next 2 were made for his sisters. He put a tremendous amount of thought and planning into the quilts. They include pictures of his grandparents, his parents from early days through their 65th wedding anniversary along with pictures of his siblings through the years. They had a special love in their family.
Tuesday, 12/22/09 Note from Darryl & Teresa: They loved loved loved their quilts!!! They said their kids will be wanting one. 12/28/09 ...these quilts you have made with so much love...they are just priceless....and will endure for many many years and hopefully for many generations to come. We can't thank you enough.

#31 Abby

Abby's daddy had surgery a couple weeks ago and is in critical condition. This quilt will hopefully help bring comfort to Abby while her Daddy is in the hospital. She is 4 years old.
Wednesday, Dec. 23rd is a happy day for Abby and her mother & grandmother! Today her daddy was able to eat broth, sit up on the side of the bed and talk to them. This is the hurdle that the doctors have been hoping for. What a Merry Christmas they will share. Friday, Dec. 25th Abby's daddy was awake to hear he is going to be a daddy again. Still a long road to recovery but they were grateful to be able to share a Merry Christmas.
Jason passed away March 17, 2010.

#26 Jill York

This quilt was made for June to give her daughter Jill for Christmas. It has shirts from her elementary school safety patrol through her high school senior class. Tshirt quilts are fun to make. The quilt is being machine quilted right now by Back Porch Quilters. After the quilt was finished more tshirts surfaced. They were made into a pillow sham (#36).
June added a bible verse on the back of the quilt: This is the day the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
Wed., 12/30 Note from Jill: I LOVED IT!!! I cried it was so special!!! Thank you so much!!!! Words cannot explain how much it means to me.

#25 Tshirt quilt

Click on pictures for larger image.

This quilt is made up of tshirts that my husband Tim and I have collected over the years. It is bigger than planned (100"x100") but is nice as a bedspread for a queen size bed. It is great to empty a storage box and keep the shirts for the memories.

#24 Teresa's Daddy

My NC neighbor Teresa lost her father on Friday, July 24th. We had been planning on making a quilt together for him but did not get it made. She emailed me the pictures and this weekend I got it made in time for her to leave this morning for Kansas to be with her mother. Her father was a man that could grow flowers or citrus anywhere he set him mind to do it. The greenhouse collages are from Belize, Alaska, Kansas and other places. Some pictures are very old - a couple are him in Guam, WWII. The center picture is her parents 50th wedding anniversary. They celebrated their 54th anniversary on the 17th of July this year.

#23 John Hyden quilt

My friend Joyce knew the hardest days after her father's passing would be her father's birthday and her birthday. The pillows below (#22) were made for his birthday and this quilt was made for her recent birthday. Although nothing takes the void away, hopefully this quilt will bring her comfort. There is a picture of her father as a baby with his mother, pictures of their family growing up and recent ones of him in his final days. He loved his picture with the Playboy Bunny. The pictures are surrounded by cats because Joyce and her husband Steve love cats passionately.

#22 John Hyden pillows

My friend Joyce and her sister Jeanne lost their father recently. He always loved celebrating his 4th of July birthday. A mutual friend of ours (Faith) and I made pillows for them to help ease the loss they will be feeling today.
Joyce and Jeanne were so surprised and thrilled to receive their pillows. They loved them. Jeanne said "......my pillow is in my living room, in a chair that daddy gave me, that belonged to his mother...."
I am so fortunate to be able to create gifts that will be cherished.

Julie and her siblings had a quilt made for their mom for Mother's Day (#15) and this one made for their dad for Father's Day. Their Dad went in the hospital today and could use some extra loving so he may get his quilt early. I call this a story quilt. It is filled with history of his family growing up in the town of Andrews, NC (formerly Longtown, NC). Cecil has 13 siblings, 5 children, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. #19 Pastor George and Mary Simmons

St. Andrews Lutheran Church presented this quilt to Pastor George Simmons as a gift to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of his Ordination. At the celebration on May 31, 2009 he said, "I am not retiring, I'm not finished yet!" The church family of St. Andrews wanted Pastor George and his wife Mary to know how much they love and appreciate them. They have been at St. Andrews for the last 15 years. If you would like to know more about Pastor George and Mary, click on "comments" below and read the comments I have received of how special they have been to St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

#17 Arnie

Happy 70th Birthday Arnie!

Arnie's niece, Debbie saw one of the quilts and knew she wanted one for her uncle's special birthday. Debbie did a great job creating collages to capture his life. She captured his love of dogs from the time he was little, his love for all of his family, his joy dancing with his sister Sue when young and when they got a little older and most of all, the sweetheart of his life, Skylar, his precious granddaughter. As you can see from the back of the quilt, it looks like Arnie always enjoys life. Happy Birthday Arnie!
July 28th Note from Debbie: My uncle hung his quilt right in the entryway to his house. It is the showpiece right as you walk in his front door!

#16 Becky McCarn

Becky McCarn retires this year after teaching for 37 years. Her very dear friend Beverly wanted to be sure she would never forget all the good times she had teaching. Beverly and her co-workers will miss her smiling face.
I heard Becky loved her quilt and snuggled with it all weekend after she received it.

Happy Mother's Day

#14 Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice

On May 16th Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice will be holding an auction. Good Shepherd is the organization that showed me the rewards of making quilts for hospice patients. This quilt was created with photographs from around Clay and Cherokee County, North Carolina. I created the quilt but the following are the ones that made it possible: the photos were furnished by Mike Gora, Judy Grove, Bill Grove, Bill Killien, John Nealy, Jessy Garrett, the Clay County Chamber of Commerce and the Valleytown Cultural Arts and Historical Society. The fabric was donated by Karen Hopple, owner of Bless My Stitches quilt shop in Murphy, NC, and the machine quilting was done and donated by Russ Adams of Back Porch Quilters of Murphy, NC. My husband Tim made the quilt holder/shelf.

#13 Melinda

Grandma Dot's daughter Gert wanted to give her Mom a special gift this Mother's Day. This quilt represents all the love, fun and appreciation of her family. Grandma Dot is simply a woman filled with love and determination to live. A couple years ago she had a heart attack and has survived cancer twice. Happy Mother's Day Grandma Dot!
Sunday, April 26th Gert could not wait to give the quilt to her Mom. Here are her comments:
Oh my gosh, Lynn... she LOVED IT! She is planning to take it to work tomorrow and in a couple weeks when we fly to Ohio for my cousin's wedding, she's taking it with her then too. Wow... she absolutely loves it! So cool! She says to tell you hello and thank you!

#11 Carolyn & Norm

In Memory of Julie When Allison's parents saw Allison's quilt (#10) they requested one of their own. They loved the way the quilt captured the life of their beautiful daughter. For their quilt we changed some of the pictures and the border color but kept the butterflies. Next week will be the anniversary of Julie's passing. Hopefully this quilt will help them through this difficult time.
July 29th Note from Carolyn: We absolutely love our Julie quilt. We have it up on the wall as a mural in our family room. It makes me sad sometimes but it's also very comforting to be constantly reminded of our Julie and how wonderful she was and how very much we miss her.

#9 Ariel

Happy Birthday Ariel

Ariel's mother, Alex, asked for a quilt for her daughter's birthday. She wanted something special to show Ariel how much she has grown from a beautiful baby to an absolutely beautiful teenager. Her family is so proud of her. I appreciate the order for this quilt, it enables me to continue making quilts for those needing extra love to wrap around them during rough times.
Thank you Alex.
Monday, April 6th an email from Alex.......it was the most amazing thing I have seen when she opened it. Her eyes got filled with tears and she cried and hugged me, a hug like I have not got since she was a little girl. Thank you so much, she sleep wrap on her quilt and she loves it.

#8 Maureen

Love story.
Carl and Maureen married at the age of 18 and had a wonderful life together raising two beautiful daughters. Carl loved his Harley Davidson almost as much the girls in his family. Unfortunately at the age of 53 Carl's life was taken due to unexpected surgery complications. Hopefully snuggling up with all their memories, this quilt will help Maureen in some way.

#7 Jennifer

Happy Birthday Jennifer
Jennifer is the daughter-in-law of Linda who I made quilt #14 (2008) for. I am happy to report that Linda is doing well taking one day at a time. She worries about how to help others as they also grieve. She asked me to make this quilt for Jennifer's birthday. When Linda saw the quilt, she made the comment I so often hear, "you captured Adam's life".

#5 Marlie Kai Dodson

Marlie Kai Dodson

Marlie is a sweet 5 year old girl who unfortunately has cancer. In January Gert Garman was able to treat Marlie to a visit with Cinderella. They had a wonderful day. This quilt was created to remind them of the magical day. Marlie's mother, Sarah, does a wonderful job keeping everyone updated on Marlie's condition. If you would like to know more about Marlie or if you would like to become one of Marlie's warriors, click on www.carepages.com/carepages/MarlieKaiDodson/updates.

October 21, 2010

Marlie just received results from her annual check up and she is cancer clear. Her Mom wants to thank everyone who has been praying for Marlie.

October 11, 2011

Message from Marlie's Mom for Team Marlie:

Marlie has been admitted to Arnold Palmer for side effects of chemo that have gotten severe. Here medial team will be doing a full scan tomorrow. The physicians are looking for tumor progression. Marlie has become weary and weak and has expressed a desire to stop treatment. We will give her full access to the excellent pastoral staff and child life specialists to guide her through the next steps. Tonight she will get fluids, pain meds, and much needed rest.

Pray for Marlie and for our family. Tomorrow we will decide to stop or continue treatment.

Love Sarah (Marlie's Mom)
